Lutheran social services of north dakota

Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota (LSSND) was a nonprofit organization that offered a variety of services including housing, food, mental health and crisis support, assistance for New Americans, family services, elder care, youth support, and disaster response across North Dakota. LSSND announced its closure in 2021 after 102 years of service, citing significant debt incurred from LSS Housing.  We give thanks to God for the many years of faithful service by LSSND and for the countless individuals and families cared for in North Dakota by its ministries.

The closure of LSSND left a significant gap in services available to North Dakotans. A variety of nonprofits and human service agencies have stepped up in an attempt to fill in these gaps, many of them taking on the programs previously housed under LSSND. You can find a list of former LSSND programs and the new agencies that facilitate them below.

Lutheran Disaster Response assembled a "North Dakota Assessment and Retention Study" upon LSSND's closure. The report documents the history of LSSND, assesses current needs and gaps in services across the state, and lays out opportunities for future engagement through partnership with Lutheran Disaster Response.
