We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work.

In March 2013, High Plains Ministry received a “cry for help” from Mandee Zerr, volunteer coordinator at Northlands Rescue Mission. The Mission was without a cook and Mandee desperately needed help providing meals. Mandee was suffering from a painful shoulder which required some necessary surgery. Two teams of volunteers from High Plains Ministry answered Mandee’s call by purchasing groceries and coffee, baking, cooking, and serving meals at the Mission.

The Mission remains without a cook and Mandee is still awaiting surgery. Again, High Plains has responded to the need by scheduling themselves to provide meals on May 3 and 4. The residents at the Mission appreciate the food and kindnesses offered but their gratitude goes beyond the food. One man expressed his appreciation for the smiles, hospitality, and fun atmosphere when High Plains folks were there! Mandee is thankful to High Plains Ministry for being “God’s work. Our hands.” during these tough times.

High Plains Ministry has an “Envelope Fund” which receives memorial and honorary gifts from families and individuals. It is one way we can continue to support the needs at the Mission. Thanks be to God!

from Bishop Bill Rindy

I don’t usually watch C-Span but the Monday following our synod assembly I heard a Senate committee having the same debate our assembly had the previous day: whether our country should allow the immigration of gay/lesbian partners of U.S. citizens from outside of the U.S. The assembly had a culturally relevant discussion. Although declining to speak corporately, people on both sides of the issues were encouraging their brothers and sisters in Christ to exercise their constitutional rights and responsibilities in a Christ-like manner. Thank you to the people of the Eastern North Dakota Synod for electing faithful voting members to do the work of our assembly.

We learned from our neighboring Bishop, Pastor Mark Narum, that change is happening all around us. As we live in the midst of change, one of our greatest opportunities comes in welcoming new neighbors. They may be different from us but share the same need for God’s love and forgiveness.

The assembly embraced the challenge to make a difference in God’s so-loved world. One of the challenges is to make a difference for our regional ministries. The Goal: each EaND Synod congregation to commit $1 per member to support our campus ministries, the Sudanese Lutheran congregation, Heart River Lutheran and their work at the Youth Correctional Facility, and beyond. The second challenge: each EaND Synod congregation to commit a second $1 per member to support our companion synod in the Central African Republic. This effort is more critical than ever as currently their country is experiencing turmoil. Until the unrest ceases, we can pray, encourage a peaceful resolution, and provide funding for our friends in the CAR to rebuild their lives. How? By suggest-ing a special, quarterly offering on the 5th Sunday of the month, encouraging each worshipper to go the “extra mile” on that extra Sunday, by placing an extra $1 per member in the plate until each congregation reaches or exceeds its goal. I know we can do this!

We also became aware that of the 65 synods of the ELCA, our synod came in 65th in our per capita support of ELCA World Hunger. We can do better than this. For the sake of the poor, the hungry, and those afflicted by disaster, we need to do better than this. How? Would your congregation be willing to take another challenge? Every time congregations gather to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, to be freely fed with the body and blood of our Lord, would/could we remember the hungry by placing a free will offering plate in the aisle (on the way to the table) for ELCA World Hunger? Offerings to feed those who will go without unless we respond? This simple act of remembering the poor, even as we remember our Lord as we gather around the table, could have a life-changing effect on us all. Will we do it?

On a different note, I wish to thank all of our pastors/spouses, diaconal ministers, and associates in ministry who made the effort to take the Mayo Clinic Healthcare Assessment. In so doing, every congregation in the synod will save 2% on healthcare premiums, each person who took the assessment will have $150 to $500 of out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed, and our synod will receive significant dollars to be used to encourage healthy living. Way to go EaND Synod rostered leaders! Please know that as the impacts of the Affordable Care Act become clear, there will be more information coming this fall that will be of great importance to all congregations.

There is plenty of work for us to do. Reaching out to new neighbors and sharing the Good News in Jesus Christ; going the “extra mile” both close to home and in the C.A.R.; sharing our abundance with those who go hungry; and modeling what it means to be an authentic, Christian community—together as the body of Christ. This could be the start of a great year for the EaND Synod that we might serve our neighbors in ways that honor our Christ.

I look forward to serving alongside of you in the time to come. God’s peace be with you as you grow in love and service.

The best of the best: Julie Aageson!

from Rev. Kari Bahe

One of Julie Aageson’s favorite images is the “tree of life”. It is fitting, when you think of her work with us over the years. Her work is rooted firmly in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. Her work branches out to help others stretch and share their God given gifts with this world. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of watching Julie help others “branch out” in their learning and “grow” in their serving. We’ve all had the joy of seeing Julie take the concept of a resource center and move it beyond books and mortar to include resourcing and networking people, events, and lives.

After serving for 27 years, Julie has more than earned the right to retire and focus her ministry in other ways. We rejoice with her and Jim as they embark on this new chapter in life. They will be moving closer to their “Littles” (as she affectionately names their grand-children). That makes our good-bye somewhat less difficult, as we know what joy that brings them.

Words to say thank you seem rather inadequate, and so perhaps the words we shall send Julie off with are: “Praise God from whom all blessings flow”. Julie, we praise God for the way you have helped the blessings of this Eastern North Dakota Synod flow so generously and wonderfully through your work.

Thank You!

from Julie Aageson

For all of you who were able to attend the synod assembly in Jamestown and to those of you who weren’t there, I want to say again a heartfelt thanks to each of you! Your kind words and notes and good wishes on the occasion of my retirement are appreciated more than words can express. The gifts of two paintings by artist Paul Nzalamba will have a true place of honor in our home—I was absolutely thrilled to receive them. One is titled “The Story” and the other is called “Discussion.” Not only do these themes echo the work of the church and of our life together, but they also reflect my own passion for and love of resource ministry—such meaningful gifts!

“The Story” by Paul Nzalamba

Among my favorite hymns is “Christ, Be our Light!” It speaks to the longing in all of us for wholeness and shared life in Christ. It asks us to be light for the world. It also reminds us that we are God’s living voice and it invites us to be servants to one another. God be with you and keep you as you continue to be each of these things in Eastern North Dakota and beyond. Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your church gathered today! Julie

Eastern North Dakota Synod Assembly 2013

Gathered around the theme, “Together at the Crossroads,” voting members for the Eastern North Dakota Assembly came together in Jamestown, April 20-21, to do the business of the synod’s annual gathering. A total of 469—voting members, guests, and visitors—from 212 congregations joined together in worship and song, learning and debate. Bishop Bill Rindy opened the assembly by introducing special guests: Bishop Mark Narum from Western North Dakota; Bishop Herbert Chilstrom, the first presiding bishop of the ELCA; and Jonathan Beyer, Churchwide representative and executive for Information Technology. Rindy also thanked the assembly planning committee, the synod council, synod staff, and the assembly manager, the Rev. Terry Brandt, associate to the bishop.

To honor this 25th anniversary of the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, each of the synod’s eight conferences created videos to illustrate eight core value statements of the ELCA. These were interspersed throughout the gathering to share examples of what it means to be God’s people, the Body of Christ—both in eastern North Dakota and around the world. Watch the videos below.

Western ND bishop Mark Narum gave two keynote addresses on themes of change. He described the dusty roads we all travel and how these roads lead to places of resurrection. Challenging us not to get caught up in meaningless squabbles, he challenged the assembly to “marinate in what really matters—resurrection and new life for all God’s people.” Synod vice-president, Shar Gumke, reminded the assembly that we ought not be a church satisfied with maintenance rather than authentic mission.

Resolutions included

Saturday evening’s banquet included Bishop Herb Chilstrom’s address about the privilege of being stewards of God’s grace. There were also several drawings for curricula resources from Augsburg Fortress Publishers and their subsidiary, Spark House. Gifts were given to Julie Aageson in appreciation for her years of service to the synod (Read her thank you letter…).

Sunday morning began with the annual Global Mission Breakfast. Members of the Global Mission committee reviewed current events in the Central African Republic including rebel attacks in Bangui and elsewhere. Worship with Holy Communion followed. The assembly offering of $11, 582 was given to The Project FM, the Sudanese Lutheran community in Fargo, and to Heart River Bridges of Hope, a ministry of Heart River Lutheran Church in Mandan, ND

After further debate and discussion of resolutions, the assembly adopted a 2014 Mission Plan of $1,367,387. It was amended to include a $100,000 extra mile challenge for the synod’s global mission companion, the Central African Republic. The Carrington Conference’s request to rename the conference Prairie Rose was discussed and approved and Leeds Lutheran Church was transferred (because of parish realignment) to the Western ND Synod.

Whenever Christianity is portrayed in television or the movies, you can almost count on hearing either “Amazing Grace,” the Lord’s Prayer, or the beginning of the 23rd Psalm. That’s ok because even the world can recognize a word which brings hope. Lord knows the world needs more hope!

The beloved verses of the 23rd Psalm … penned by David, a good shepherd, … under the influence of the Holy Spirit, provide some of the most hope-filled words God could have ever given to us.

Can you remember times in your life, when you could feel the gentle breeze coming off of the cool, refreshing waters, as if you were lying by a stream on a carpet of God’s plushest grass? Was there a time when you didn’t need to question God… because life was so good that it was obvious you were not only loved by God, … but that God’s most visible face was that of pure love? Was it when you held the miracle of a new-born child in your hands at the waters of Holy Baptism? … to be drown with Christ… and to be raised to newness of life?

Wow, God really is good… all the time!

Of course, there are those times when life is less-than ideal. Trouble comes, either by our own doing,… or the poor choices of others,… or just the brokenness of creation. The skillfully used rod or staff in the right hands can comfort or restore us to safety as we see God redeeming the mess that we collectively made. Sometimes the staff redirects or even lifts us out of harm’s way, putting us back on the right path.

After all, it would never do for God to forsake one of God’s own children, so we shouldn’t be surprised if God uses you or me to bring glory back to God for Christ’s sake.

We know that the powerful images and metaphors of this Psalm will break down as do most all metaphors if pushed too far, but this Psalm sure does make it more than ok to called a sheep, … as long as God gets to be the shepherd. :)

We really do have all we need.

The longer we live, the more we realize that even with the best shepherd, there are no guarantees of green pastures and still waters every moment of every day in this life. Bombs exploding at the end of marathons, blizzards, floods, car accidents, disease, cancer, and any other number of unwelcome, shadow-valley journeys remind us that death is only a heartbeat away.

We are regularly and painfully reminded we are dust…

and to dust we shall return.

But even as we walk through these shadow-valleys, we know,… we are promised,… that we do not walk them alone. Jesus himself promised that he would never leave us nor forsake us; that he would not leave us orphaned; that he would be with us, even to the end of the age. Perhaps this is why St. Stephen was able to forgive those who hurled stones at him even as he was traveling deep into the shadow-valley between this life and the next.

Perhaps we’ve seen it in the lives of those we’ve known who are so close to our Lord, that as their “goin’ home time” drew near, it was as if they could see, touch, and taste the table prepared, …the room readied, …the over-flowing cup.
If you’ve ever seen a beautiful death, you know what I mean. Some would call this part of that peace of God which passes all understanding.

Once you know THE good shepherd, it’s more than ok to be a sheep. It’s a really good place to be. In fact, it is the only place to be! For no matter what life brings, pastures or valleys, …death or over-flowing cups,… all sheep are destined for anointing and dwelling in the presence of God… forever.

I don’t know where you find yourself today. It really doesn’t matter, as long as you are in the presence of God. For God knows you… God loves you…and God will never leave you.

And like any good shepherd, God calls you by name to the green pasture and the still waters. Like the best host ever, God prepares a table for you… (even if you do have enemies), … anoints your head with oil, and fills your cup beyond the brim… and all of this is without end.

This doesn’t mean there won’t be shadows and valleys. They are as certain as death and taxes. But God’s deeper reality is that, even there, in the very depths of despair, … God is… and you are not godforsaken. You are God-so-loved!

Remember: God so loved the world… you, me, and any other would-be sheep, that he gave his only Son; who didn’t stop when he got to the valley of the shadow of death, but walked it for you and me; so that whosoever believes in him will not perish, but have life that is eternal.

Now that sounds a lot like that verse you see on TV written on posters in the end-zone during all of those football games…
but that’s a different sermon… or is it?

Amen?
Amen!

We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together.

An amazing trip to Ethiopia is being led by Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. Kim Adams, Calvary’s Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator, connected with Kelly Putty, Founder and CEO of Ordinary Hero (Ordinary Hero Foundation is a nonprofit child advocacy organization; their goal is to encourage and provide a way for every person to make a difference in the life of a child in need through adoption, missions, or local outreach.)

A group of 26 high school students and adults from Calvary and Sharon Lutheran Churches, Grand Forks and Hope and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches, Fargo invite you to pray for their journey which began April 5 and concludes April 14, 2013. This trip will be focused on spreading God’s love through serving the needy in Ethiopia: visiting and bringing aid to orphanages, villages, the mountainside community, and much more.

Some thoughts from a traveler from Bethlehem Lutheran in Fargo, Rev. Sonja Kjar —

“…it won’t be long until we take off on this mission adventure in which we will be sharing some of God’s love through our presence, helping at an orphanage, bringing “Blessing Bags” (filled with basic necessities) for children and helping with art camps and soccer camps. You may think, well, you don’t need to go across the globe to help kids in need, which is true. But I know that experiencing another culture and people other than us helps us learn about the amazingly diverse world we are a part of, and expands our view of God’s love and concern for this world. Besides, what teenager or adult won’t benefit from a dose of 3rd world reality to bring the very privileged lives we lead into clearer focus. I am certain we will see that love and concern can be given and received regardless of one’s material possessions.

…the opportunity presented itself and my daughter Annika first expressed interest (A teenager wanting to do something way outside her comfort zone, life experience, and circle of friends? Cool!). And so with our good friend Kim Adams (Godmother to Annika) and twenty some other people we head to Ethiopia…

I just listened to a radio program about transformative travel. I expect this will be one of those experiences. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers…”

Each day’s reflection includes a biblical citation, meditation, prayer, Bible reading, and hymn text. Images include ashes, treasure, the number 40, the name of God, sacrifice, outsiders and more. Preview at augsburgfortress.org (B3665)

Consider the spiritual practice of writing for the 40 days of Lent. Writing to God: 40 Days of Praying with My Pen by Rachel Hackenberg includes a special section of prayers and prompts for Holy Week and Easter. Meant to be used with Peter Mazar’s Forty Days and Forty Nights: A Lenten Ark, this pop-up Lenten calendar provides a visual experience of the journey to Easter. These two resources could be a meaningful way for Old and New Testament characters to lead readers through the 40 days of Lent. (PR479, K149)

The newest of the Lenten Journey resources is Lenten Journey: Beyond Question by Eric Burtness.
Hymns and the Way They Shape Theology

Part of the ministry of resourcing is sharing unpublished resources. Pastor Roger Reinhart (Richland & Our Savior’s, Colfax) recently shared “Our Hymns Shape Our Theology.” Roger underscores how formative hymns can be. His article is shared below. The following resources echo similar themes:

Our Hymns Shape our Theology

by Pastor Roger Reinhart

I recently heard someone teaching about the hymns we sing, “Our hymns shape our theology.” I think these words speak volumes about the importance of what we sing at worship. It is important to have a nice melody set in an appropriate harmony. At least as important as having “sing-able” songs is to have words that lift up what we believe about God and God’s relationship with us.

What are the characteristics of a fitting hymn or spiritual song for Lutherans?

It’s about God

God’s love for the world and what God has done for us in Jesus.

It’s not about “I, me, my”

Does the song speak more about God or me? Who is the song really about (look at the pronouns)?

It reflects a “Theology of the Cross”

Life is hard, and in the midst of trouble and darkness God finds us – not a God who has rejected us, but the God who came to die rather than lose us, the God who understands us, the God who is in the darkness with us and for us, the God who loves us just as we are.

It does not reflect “decision theology”

If I know myself to be a child of God, I thank God that God has decided to make me God’s own – it is not mydecision that does this (see Luther’s explanation of the 3rd Article of the Creed in his Small Catechism). Being a Child of God does not depend on my decision, my reaching out, or my choosing. Thanks be to God that in Jesus Christ God has decided for us!

Being Christian is not exclusive but inclusive

We are not “better” or “more loved by God” if we are Christian (not a part of some “in-crowd”), but to us has been given the Good News (the Gospel) that God loves all people and has forgiven us all in the cross of Jesus Christ (we are called together and then sent out by this Good News). “All are welcome in this place,” is the message God sends through us. This gives new shape to our lives, indeed it gives new life!

It is sacramental

Lutherans believe in the “means of Grace” (the ways that God gives us undeserved blessings, saves us). In particular, we include: The Word, Holy Baptism, & Holy Communion. (Again, see Luther’s Small Catechism on “Holy Baptism”, “Office of the Keys”, and “Holy Communion”). Indeed, God is with us all the time – but in the Means of Grace God shows us that God is here for us. Worship itself becomes a sacrament of God’s gifts to us.

It is about Community

This may be most difficult for us. We live in a culture and time where: “It is all about me.” “It’s just me & Jesus.” Even salvation has become an individualistic thing, and much of modern “religious music” reflects this. However, in the Church, we sing in praise of God who calls us together to be God’s people (again, look at the pronouns. Are we singing as a community – “we, us, our”; or am I singing just for me –”I, me, my”).

This list is not meant to be exhaustive, and, no doubt a hymn or two even in our ELW can be found that strays from these foundations; but in general these are guiding principles for our hymns and spiritual songs. In addition to a huge treasury of hymns and songs from the past, there are also many beautiful and inspiring contemporary hymns and songs that fit with our Lutheran hymnody. Some are written by Lutherans, of course, but many are written by people of other denominations, as well as from the Christian Church around the world. Our ELW contains a great variety of songs & hymns, old and new. And, of course, there are many more waiting for us to discover, and many yet to be written.

We are very blessed here at Richland and Our Savior’s to have a Parish Worship Committee and now a Parish Praise Band. “Sing to God a new song.” I thank God for these groups who are helping us to sing songs and hymns at worship that will: first, reflect the love of God who comes to us in Jesus; and, second, shape our theology as we worship together.

Please share what your congregation is doing for Lent! This rich season of the church year is prime time for deepening our worship life and living the remarkable drama of new life in Christ.

Lenten Journey: Water Marks is the newest in the Book of Faith Lenten Reflections. These water stories from both Old and New Testaments would be really helpful for a focus on baptism. Other Lenten Journeys include 40 Days with the Lord’s Prayer, Marks of the Christian, and Seven Wonders of the Word. Weekly themes and ideas for worship are included. For individual, group, or congregational use. Preview copies available.

Baptismal themes can also be found in the Washed and Welcome Sourcebook. Articles for reprinting in worship folders or newsletters are available. In Living the Promises of Baptism, key bible verses are highlighted.

ELCA World Hunger offers a Lenten series—12 meals, 12 related stories which are also scripted as dramas for those interested, facts, placemats, fundraising and ideas.

For worship, be sure to consider the DVD series, The Greatest Story: Jesus. The focus on gospel stories includes compelling sand art images that will engage all ages. Preview copy available.

For C.S. Lewis aficionados, themes from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe provide a creative way to focus on Lenten themes using the video, the book, and the LLW Discovery Guide. Copies available.

Check out Pastor Tom Weitzel’s Handbook for the Discipline of Lent, A Lenten Retreat, and Stations of the Cross as well as other Lenten resources at liturgybytlw.com

For worship planning: Worship Guidebook for Lent and the Three Days together with the Music Sourcebook for Lent and the Three Days from Augsburg Fortress. Preview copies available.

Ideas to consider:

Stories Around the Fire: three or four people tell two-minute stories of a favorite Bible verse—how they came across it, what it meant to them then and what it means to them today. Each week people who tell their stories write their names in a congregational family Bible next to their texts in the margins. “We had people as young as nine and people in their 80′s share their stories.”

Sermon series are memorable. There are so many cleverly named series all over the internet. Pick a catchy title and develop your own pieces to it.

Spirituality for Busy People: everybody is busy. Then pick practices such as Sabbath keeping, service, prayer, blessing, eating together, vocation, testimony to unpack during Lent.

Consider Barbara Brown Taylor’s An Altar in the World: look for God outside of church walls. Take a chapter a week to find God in the everyday events of our lives. Have people tells stories of God at work, at school, at leisure—in unexpected places.

The timelessness of Holden Evening Prayer: “We are still in love with Holden Evening Prayer—it sustains us year after year!”

For a rich Lenten worship experience, consider the new Holden Prayer Around the Cross, a set of resources adapted from Holden Evening Prayer and Prayer Around the Cross by Susan Briehl, Tom Witt, and Marty Haugen. To accompany HPAC, a set of musical resources is available in Singing Our Prayer: Companion to Holden Prayer Around the Cross.

TheThoughtfulChristian.com has several downloadable resources available for Lent. Take a look at Walking the Way of the Cross with Paul.

You’re invited to take a look at a stewardship resource ideal for Lent: Mark Allan Powell’s Biblical Stewardship: Our Duty and Delight features seven 20-minute video sessions on DVD, a comprehensive study guide and participant handouts. Session titles include Belonging to God, What is a Steward?, Treasures and Hearts, Motives for Giving, Duty and Delight, and Cheerful Sacrifices.

The 40 Day Journey books for small groups or individual use are designed for Lent. Titles include Journeys with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Joan Chittister, Julian of Norwich, Martin Luther, Madeleine L’Engle, and others.

If you’ve found the Nooma films interesting, consider matching themes from the texts for Lent with the short and engaging DVDs. It’s an excellent way to repeat the themes and invite conversation about the weekly texts. Call the Resource Center for a list!

Bread themes for Lent? Try a Lenten study called Bread in the Wilderness: Spiritual Famine or Gospel Feast, six sessions about hunger and food. A new six-part bible study called Bread and Broth also invites participants to share soup and bread while learning about Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Elisha, John the Baptist and Jesus.

Northwestern Minnesota Synod has shared “Lent 2012: A Season for Prayer and Renewal.” For congregational renewal and reflection, it includes prayer petitions, a plan for midweek worship, Bible readings, mission resources and more. Call the Resource Center for a copy or download.

Teach us to Pray introduces participants to the full spectrum of Christian prayer methods and encourages them to incorporate these practices into their daily lives. Twenty-two lesson plans can be used as a year-long course, as four separate courses or individually. Adaptable for Lent, adult education, prayer and spirituality groups or retreats.
