Among our most frequent requests are questions about small group study and conversation. Sometimes this means bible study or a study on biblical themes; others ask for resources that will help them with specific topics. They all reflect our common need for meaning and purpose, our search for God and God’s presence in the chaos of life, and a desire for thoughtful study and meaningful community.

We’ve chosen a sampling here of “our best recommendations.” Clearly, these reflect a wide range of topics, interests, approaches, and styles. And clearly, they are a sampling. We invite your recommendations as well. Always we are looking for resources that bear Christ to the world and challenge us as followers of Christ to see ourselves and the world through the lens of God’s overwhelming grace.

Eastern North Dakota Synod - ELCA: Studies for Small Groups

You will find here a collection of remarkable people whose courage and compassion echo both the ancient prophets and Jesus’ call for justice-making, for peace-making. The voices of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Mother Teresa, William Sloane Coffin, Dorothy Day, Desmond Tutu, Jim Wallis, Joan Chittister and so many others witness to radical faith, to “walking the talk,” integrating faith with practice, making Christian responsibility for the common good a no-brainer. May their willingness to be unafraid, to be prophetic, to “go against the grain,” inspire and compel us with the same courage to use our own prophetic voices.

This collection is offered as an entry for shaping adult studies. As you begin planning for fall programs- adult education, Sunday morning forums, small groups-consider using this theme. In a time when we so often are tempted to despair, these are voices that keep us faithful.
