Kinshasa – Two United Nations agencies are stepping up efforts to assist refugees from the Central Africa Republic (CAR) who have fled into the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The UN agency for refugees, UNHCR, and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have come together to assist the large numbers of people who have fled fighting between Seleka rebels and the CAR army since mid-December. I know this list is rather limited and I would request that you forward as needed, but wanted to get the news to the partners of EELRCA in a timely manner. Some of you may be aware that rebel activity to the north of CAR has been increasing the last few weeks and they’ve been taking control of more and more towns as they move toward Bangui. Today the US embassy evacuated non-essential personnel and advised US citizens to either evacuate or prepare to leave. The violence or activity has so far not been in the communities where the church is found, nor where we have personnel. Continue reading…

Many of us use this season to focus on how the Light of the world is reflected in and through our global work. This past February Marlene Arneson and I traveled to the Central African Republic on a Mission/Exchange trip representing the Eastern North Dakota Synod. The Central African Republic is one of the five poorest countries in the world and also Eastern North Dakota Synod’s Companion Synod. Deb Williams representing the Western North Dakota Synod, Naomi Storch from Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry, and two women from the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast traveled with us.

The Women for Christ of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic held their national conference in Carnot, CAR, from February 21–26, 2012. The presentations were well-received by the delegates, who numbered some 250 women from all parts of CAR, along with the six American women who represented the U.S. partners of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the CAR.
