I will, and I ask God to help me…

In a spirited and spirit-filled service of celebration, William E. Rindy was installed as bishop of the Eastern North Dakota Synod on Saturday, August 16.  Surrounded by Lutherans from across the synod, by colleague bishops, ecumenical partners, synod pastors and lay leaders, and family and friends, the installation took place at Hope Lutheran Church in south Fargo.

On this beautiful August afternoon, a full sanctuary resonated with music and liturgy, a melding of old and new.  Worship reflected the deep roots of the church together with hallelujah acclamations accompanied by instruments, organ, piano, Hope Lutheran’s praise band, and the Cathedral Choir from Rindy’s former parish, First Lutheran in Fargo.  Pictures and images of Eastern North Dakota Synod congregations were projected on an overhead screen.

ELCA Presiding-Bishop Mark Hanson addressed Bishop Rindy first with words of scripture:  “Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock … to shepherd the church of God … Guard the good treasure entrusted to you … “   And then with questions:  “Will you be faithful in your office?  . . Will you be diligent in your study of the Holy Scriptures and in your use of the means of grace?  Will you pray for God’s people … [will you] nourish them with the Word and Holy Sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living?” to which Bishop Rindy replied again and again, “I will, and I ask God to help me.”

Bishop Rindy’s responses were heartfelt, humble expressions of gratitude for this call to serve the people of Eastern North Dakota.  In words of thanksgiving, he asked for ongoing prayer as he accepts this new call as synod bishop, pastor, teacher, and shepherd.   He also acknowledged mentors along the way including former bishop, Rick Foss who preached at the installation, together with others who have shaped his journey of faith.  Bishop Rindy spoke of the “us” that includes all God’s people and of the Body of Christ we are called to be. And he made clear the privilege and responsibility of his new call.

With gratitude and joy, we welcome our new bishop asking God’s blessing and guidance as we begin this journey of faith together.  May God be with us all!

We thank God for Lee, Naomi, and Rick!

Rick joins the staff at Luther Seminary August 1. Lee returns to retirement on Lake Kabekona , MN July 1. Naomi moves to interim associate with the bishop at the synod office. Blessings to these faithful servants.
