What images come to mind when we hear about what it means to be hungry? What does hunger have to do with daily life, with Eastern North Dakota Synod, with being Christian?
Don't miss this amazing panel!
The churchwide organization functions interdependently with congregations and synods to carry out God's mission in the world -- to share God's boundless love with the world. The churchwide organization is guided by the biennial Churchwide Assembly, the Church Council and the four elected officers of this church.
The ELCA Churchwide (external link) is divided into 3 Units: Congregational and Synodical Mission, Global Mission, and Mission Advancement. The unit for Congregational and Synodical Mission grows the church and spreads God’s Word by working in conjunction with synods and congregations.
ELCA World Hunger (external link) responds to hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world by addressing root causes. Through a comprehensive program of relief, development, education, and advocacy, people are connected to the resources they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Between 70-75 percent of ELCA World Hunger funds are spent internationally, and 20-25 percent are spent domestically.
Together, in Christ’s name, we experience the transforming power of connection. As individuals, congregations, and synods, our humble offerings and actions are gathered, blessed, and multiplied. Together, we are ELCA World Hunger.
Bread for the World (external link) is a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. God's grace in Jesus Christ moves us to help our neighbors, whether they live in the next house, the next state, or the next continent. Confronting the problem of hunger can seem overwhelming. What can one person do? Plenty. Bread for the World members write personal letters and emails and meet with our members of Congress. Working through our churches, campuses, and other organizations, we engage more people in advocacy.
Lutheran World Relief (external link) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1945 to respond to the needs of communities devas- tated by World War II. Since then, it has evolved from a relief agency shipping material resources to war-torn Europe to an agency that works with partners worldwide to respond to emer- gencies, seek lasting solutions to rural poverty, and work for peace and justice for all. LWR works to promote equity, strengthen organizational capacity, and empower communities to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives, while continually learning to increase our impact. LWR works to reduce poverty and injustice by helping communities increase and expand the resources they need to live productive, healthy and empowered lives.
The Great Plains Food Bank (external link) is North Dakota’s largest hunger-relief organization who's vision is to create a hunger free North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota by recovering and distributing surplus food, engaging in community partnerships and advocating for social change. We form the backbone of organizations working together to efficiently alleviate hunger in 54 counties across North Dakota and western Minnesota. The Great Plains Food Bank has been feeding children, seniors and working families for more than 25 years -- touching the lives of 1 in 12 North Dakotans who seek food assistance each year.
Come join us for an exceptional opportunity to learn more about hunger and what it has to do with being Christian in eastern North Dakota.
